IKEA knows how to put home furnishings together!

They’re famous for their wordless, illustrated assembly manuals. IKEA Norfolk, Norfolk Animal Care Center (NACC) and Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center are putting something special together – families and pets. Throughout July, all dog & cat adoptions are just $35 for our “No Assembly Required” adoption special thanks to IKEA Norfolk & the Friends of NACC partnering to help Norfolk's homeless animals. And...if you show your IKEA family card when you adopt, you will also get free NACC swag!

NACC's Pet Pantry

NACC, along with Friends of NACC run the area's only free pet food pantry.

Do you have some spare unopened bags of cat and/or dog kibble? We are more than happy to take them! Our pet pantry serves as a free resource to help those in need of temporary assistance feeding their pets. Sometimes our stock gets a little low.  Drop your donations off at NACC - 5585 Sabre Road, Norfolk, VA 23502.  Call ahead for shelter hours (757) 441-5505.

NOTE: Only unopened bags of food can be accepted.  If you have opened bags of pet food, consider reaching out to area dog and cat rescue's. They may gladly accept and appreciate them.

If you are struggling to feed your pets, we can help! Click here to get more information about NACC's mobile pet pantry and how you can obtain free food to help get you and your pets through tough times.

Senior Dogs at Norfolk
Animal Care
 & Adoption Center Fetch Grant

Norfolk, VA – Old dogs have something to wag about this summer!

The Grey Muzzle Organization just announced the recipients of its annual grants, and dogs at Norfolk Animal Care Center are among the winners. We are thrilled that Friends of NACC is one of 90 animal welfare groups chosen from 370 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs. “This grant will help us keep senior dogs in their homes with their families, by creating a fund that can be distributed to pet owners who are struggling to afford medical care, behavior help, or pet deposits. Eligible pet owners will participate in a consultation with a Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center team member to determine their need for assistance and the likelihood that such assistance will result in the pet staying in the home. Once qualified, funds will be distributed directly to the veterinary care provider, trainer, or landlord. The intended outcome is a reduction in senior dogs surrendered due to cost of medical care, behavior concerns, or pet deposits.

The national nonprofit, The Grey Muzzle Organization, improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries, and other nonprofit groups nationwide. For details, please visit

Greetings,

The Friends of the Norfolk Animal Care Center Board (FNACC) is pleased to share with you our Annual Report for 2023. The programs we support reflect our mission:

“To support the Norfolk Animal Care Center in sheltering and caring for Norfolk’s stray and homeless animals, to promote and facilitate adoptions, to assist with special needs medical care, to promote and support spay/neuter in the community, and to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.”

As we reflect on the past year at FNACC, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication of our community. Our annual report is a testament to the collective efforts that have made a significant impact on the lives of so many of Norfolk’s homeless and stray animals.

This year’s report highlights the accomplishments we’ve achieved together, from successful adoption events, various fundraisers, and medical assistance.  We’ve seen our family of supporters grow not only in numbers but also in financial support and commitment to animal welfare.

This year we celebrate our 10th annual Octoberfest fundraising event and continue our partnership with IKEA. We welcomed a new NACC Bureau Manager and are excited to work closely with her and her dedicated staff on joint concerns and projects.  We also launched our mobile pet pantry program with a gift in memory of our friend and fellow board member, Tammy Dodson.

We invite you to read the stories of resilience and compassion that define our organization. Your support has been the cornerstone of our success, and it is with great pride that we share these accomplishments with you.

Sign up for our monthly newsletter to stay informed of our various activities and stories about the many animals we help.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. Together we are creating a brighter future for Norfolk’s homeless animals.

With warm regards,

Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Board
